Book Club – Readers Welcome

Monthly at The Clubhouse

Desert Breezes Book Club – The Desert Breezes Book Club meets monthly to discuss the book we read during the month. Each meeting starts at 7 pm with some social conversation and then we get into the book. All readers, be they avid or recreational, are welcome to join us!

October, 2025

The Book Club took the summer off from meetings, but the members were busy reading, while traveling and while at home. Our first meeting after our break was on September 16 and included exchanging recommendations of books to read, including “The Atmosphere”, “The River Is Waiting”, and “Lightning in a Mason Jar”. One book got a poor review, “The Emperor of Gladness”.

Linda Demetrick shared with us her review of “The Wilder Shore”, by Camille Peri. It is a biography of Robert Louis Stevenson and his wife Fanny. The book is full of adventures and reflects their real life in which Fanny was the prey of another man, and so on. Lots of action and also a very thoughtful read.

Barbara Crawford reviewed “The Woman in the White Kimono”, by Ana Johns. The book is historical fiction featuring a woman torn between her culture and her heart; it takes place in Japan in 1957. It features a woman who is pledged to one man but she loves an American sailor and she then gets pregnant. The story is involved but quite interesting and well written.

Our next meeting of the Book Club is Wednesday, October 29 at 7 pm at the clubhouse. Over the weeks until then we will have read “Secret of Secrets”, the new novel by Dan Brown. For more information about the Book Club or to make arrangements to attend, contact sherrycarnevale@gmail.com.

May & June, 2025

On April 8, the Book Club met at the clubhouse to discuss the book we read in March, “By Any Other Name”, by Jodi Picoult. It was the story of a woman who wrote many of Shakespeare’s plays and poems. She could not be credited because she was a woman; she needed the money to support her family so she accepted the role of being one of Shakespeare’s ghost writers. One of the woman’s descendants who lives in the present dayWe liked the book and gave it a 8.6 rating out of 10.

On June 10, we will meet again. This time we will discuss two books, “We All Live Here”, by Jojo Moyes and “Mrs. Quinn’s Rise to Fame”, by Olivia Ford. Members can either read one book or both to join in the discussion. We usually don’t meet again until September, and have a list of books recommended for summer reading. We will share our opinions of the books we read when we get together again.
